A coffee lover’s guide to Melbourne coffee culture

Looking back at the beginning of 2014, it’s safe to say this is when my coffee “addiction” began. It was when I was off visiting family in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia for Christmas and New Years that my coffee-loving cousin invited me to explore the Central Business District (CBD) with her despite being jet lagged from my early flight. Suffice to say, from my one cup of coffee in the morning college freshman self to the five cups of coffee in a day college graduate self’s transition really began in this city where coffee is a life form. I kid you not.

Which is why instead of the usual introductory post about Victoria (mostly Melbourne), I’ve decided to start with giving you a handful guide to coffee shops I’ve discovered, my cousin has always loved, and some that slowly stray away from CBD.

The Culture:

If you fancy yourself a good cup with five other strangers sharing a small table in one of the laneways, that’s what Melbourne will do for you. Not only that but you’ll find yourself loving it. In fact, it’s pretty common for random coffee shops to pop out of nowhere in the city or suburb and even more so when you just want a friendly neighborhood vibe.

As an avid coffee fan, I’m proud to say that almost everyone in Victoria would feel that way. There’s no coffee shop that’s too…slow or one that’s commercialized. I honestly only remember one Starbucks branch in CBD and barely anyone goes here considering that it’s also surrounded with tons of other shops.

Although if you want to go out for brunch while getting to visit one of the many suburbs, I’ll be honest — none of them will disappoint you when it comes to the cafes. You’ll have tons of opportunities to go everywhere and getting to experience each suburb “vibe” while drinking a cup of coffee.

Coffee Preferences:

Since Australians love medium roast 100% arabica coffee, it’s no secret that people all over the world would love to have a taste of their own blend.

When I started this “addiction”, I was so used to the Filipino’s Nescafe 3-in-1 coffee mix that after my trip in Australia, I’ve learned to drink straight black, know the difference between a macchiato and a cappuccino while also be able to tell the barista that they burned my cup (this barely happens in Aussie though).

For starters, I love a good soy latte, flat white (yes!!!), and a cappuccino. Of course this would depend on your pastry or meal.

Bit of a warning though, I learned to drink like 4-6 cups a day just because I wanted to try every coffee shop I could encounter! So, if you’re not used to coffee….I won’t advise it. Ha.
